Today I’m going to show you how to limit login attempts on wordpress. So to limit the login attempts to our WordPress admin area which will help with security. We just need to install a free plugin. So just click on the left hand side from your dashboard where it says plugins.
Then up at the top click Add New.
Then in the search bar in the top right just type the words Limit login attempts. And hit return on your keyboard to search.
It should be this first one and you just want to click Install Now.
And then Activate the plugin.
Now I on the left hand side if we click Settings.
And then under that click Limit login attempts.
Here we’ll see how many people have been locked out which is going to be a much higher number than you may think, when i first installed this on let’s build WP i was just doing it as a precaution. I didn’t think my site was really big enough for anyone to be trying to hack it or anything like that and within the first day it was something like 50 or 60 total lock codes. So it’s definitely something I recommend installing and especially when it’s free.
We can set how many times you can retry. I don’t recommend setting this to one or two. I’d probably set it as three or four because there’s always a possibility that you’re going to mess up your own password or forget your password. And then you’re going to end up being locked out of your own site. You can choose how long you want them to be locked out four and after how many lockouts we can increase the time. So if someone’s tried three times and been locked out if they do that four times they’re not going to be locked out for 24 hours. I’d probably set this to to myself. You can choose how many are still reset. Then just leave everything else alone and underneath you can choose if you’d like an email or not.
I check this box at first but then how to come back and uncheck it because of how many emails I was receiving and at this point. I wasn’t even getting that many visitors to my site it was maybe 100 200 a day and I was getting 50 60 emails a day. So it’s really up to yourself if you want to receive an email or not. And once we’re done we can just click Change Options underneath.
And at the top you’ll see our options have been changed.
So that’s why you limit login attempts on WordPress.
